Qualities of an Effective Leader

During the past several decades, numerous books and articles have been written exploring the qualities that make people good leaders. Researchers have tried to understand whether leaders are born or trained and whether it is possible to educate successful leaders (Marques, 2004). There have been heated debates regarding the basic set of characteristics that a perfect leader should possess, with some authors arguing that by developing these qualities, almost any person can become an effective leader (Okum, 2012). However, although I admit there are some acquired qualities defining good leaders, leadership is a far more complex and elusive concept. Therefore, in this essay, I argue that the premise that every person can become a leader with the good training and commitment is false.

It is popular today to argue that leaders can be made, and numerous leadership training programs exist to prepare people for leadership positions (Riggio, 2009). This system is based on the idea that there is a set of required characteristics and skills that allow people to lead others. These include communication, positivity, motivation, commitment, creativity, flexibility, ability to delegate, and many others. Leaders should also possess decision-making and conflict resolution skills and be smart to assess the consequences of their actions (Riggio, 2009). It is believed that good leaders should possess the so-called social intelligence, which is the ability to understand social situations and manage the team successfully. The main idea behind leadership training is that all these qualities can be trained and developed in any person, given that this person shows due dedication and commitment (Riggio, 2009).

However, although I am aware that a person is not born with all these characteristics, I think it would be wrong to claim that everyone is suitable for leadership. As argued by Okum (2012), every individual is born with a specific set of skills and talents that he/she develops throughout the lifespan. These skills can be shaped by the numerous factors such as the socioeconomic background, education, culture, personality, and so on. In other words, the environment and some biological and psychological processes define us as personalities and make us different. There are introverts and extraverts, team players and independent workers, active and passive, confident and doubtful; in other words, there is a diversity of personalities and mindsets that cannot all be suitable for leadership (Okum, 2012). Some people are more successful when they have an opportunity to simply do their work under someone’s supervision.

An interesting point was made by Bouvard (2013), who argued that contemporary business schools make people believe that all should be leaders, which is utterly wrong. As noted by the author, there should also be dedicated and competent workers who can follow, work in teams, and simply perform their duties. If we all are leaders, there will be no one to lead, argues Bouvard (2013). I support this position and think that there is no need to torture oneself trying to develop some leadership skills you may not even need. I think that people should take on the roles they are most comfortable with instead of nurturing vain hopes to become great leaders.

In this way, I conclude that leadership is far more complex than it is currently believed. Indeed, leaders should possess a great number of skills and characteristics to be able to inspire and lead the followers. However, it would be wrong to think that these characteristics can be trained and developed in every person. Some people are more satisfied working in teams and following managers, and it is not something to be ashamed of. We are all different, and this is what modern companies should accept to thrive.
