Multiculturalism: A Very Short Introduction

Multiculturalism Analysis Essay Sample

Our world is getting smaller and smaller. It is not only due to the fact that there are more people every day, but also because we are now more connected than ever. Just think about how different things were a couple of centuries ago: most people would never leave their village or town back then. They would spend their entire live in their corner with the ones like them. Traveling was not just something expensive, it was something pretty much impossible for common people. Today, a person can travel from New York to Tokyo in a matter of day. Isn’t that amazing?

Of course it is quite outstanding to think about. People are switching jobs, places, countries like they never did before. What is there not to like? However, when people are constantly moving it adds to the level of multiculturalism. It is not like multicultural societies have appeared only in recent years, no, most of them were created years ago. But now we see it more than ever. How should we deal with it?

On one hand, it’s simply amazing. With societies getting more divers, the level of racism and intolerance naturally getting lower and lower. We are exchanging traditions, ideas and cultures. People today know more about other races and nationalities than they have ever known before. We learn to respect others and see for ourselves how amazing and diverse our planet is.

However, not everyone agrees that multiculturalism brings only good with it. “Oh, those people must all be racist, because they hate multiculturalism!” – is an easy thing to say, but it is not always the case. Of course, there are people that simple have a completely unreasonable hate for anyone who doesn’t know resemble themselves, but this is the topic for another time. But some people have some pretty reasonable concerns. The main issue they have with multiculturalism is the face that if every culture is mixed together, that what is left from individuality? This is especially true for smaller countries. If rapidly a lot of people of different culture move to a tiny country, the culture of this country can be at risk of being completely forgotten.

Of course there are ways to benefit from multiculturalism without dissolvent of everyone’s individuality. We should simply respect the culture of one another. Different parts of the world have different sets of traditions and custom, and in case we ever move there – we must obey them. This will help not only to preserve the culture, but also will help us to adjust in a new society. A win-win!
